Retford Market Square

FREE EVENT

Come and enjoy the delights of a traditional English fete... in the centre of Retford!

It's going to be a fun and entertaining day with a variety of different traditional activities including Waites Groups (musicians), Retford Charter-signing re-enactments with TaleGate Theatre, Pilgrim embroiders, traditional games, competitions, artisan foods & drink, arts, crafts and artisan stalls, books & music and much more.

Waites Groups

Square Fete will enjoy medieval music throughout the event performed by by local Waites group - The Doncaster Waites, The Leeds Waits, and The City of Lincoln Waites. This was the music that the Mayflower Pilgrims heard in the streets, at weddings and civic events. There will be a variety of fascinating instruments in use from Shawms to the Hurdy-Gurdy – if you don’t know what they are, our musicians will show you.

With their origins in medieval times, Waites were the original town bands and were kept busy!  They and played in the streets and entertained the crowds for feasts, weddings, balls and civic events as well as playing in procession for the mayor-making and public proclamations and they attended the mayor to church on Sundays and festivals.  They also patrolled town streets at night during the dark winter months, playing their instruments and crying out the time and "All's well."

Retford Charter-signing Re-enactment

Look out for the 15 minute performances of the Retford Charter-signing re-enactment, performed by local favourites, TaleGate Theatre and taking place 3 times during the day at 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

Retford is one of the oldest boroughs in England and was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086 as 'Redeforde'.  The Borough of East Retford was established in the reign of King Henry 1st in 1105.  It was later granted a Royal Charter by King Henry 3rd in 1246 which allowed a market to be held every Thursday.  In 1275 King Edward extended the Charter to also allow a Saturday market. That tradition continues today, and with the addition of a Friday market.
