Camps, Trenches, Trains and Tanks: Archaeology of WW2 in Sherwood Forest

Online Talk
Thursday 24 June 2021

A talk presented by Mercian Archaeology Services, introducing the archaeological evidence of WW2 which can still be seen in Sherwood Forest today.

During the Second World War large tracts of Sherwood Forest were requisitioned by the military to act as military ammunition stores, prisoner of war camps, displaced persons' camps, and training areas.

A large part of the Spirit of Wartime Sherwood project involves recording the archaeological remains of World War II which are still evident across numerous sites. Starting in October 2021, Mercian Archaeology Services plan to use the latest technologies of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) Survey, alongside information that can be gleaned from historic documents, aerial photographs and personal memories, to look for the potential remains of earthworks, buildings, and infrastructure.

A pilot project has already been carried out by Mercian with ground-truthing of archaeological remains in the Sherwood Forest National Nature Reserve, Thoresby Estate, and various locations around the forest, to record and identify remains on the ground, and to determine the usefulness of LiDAR data and aerial photography for ground survey.

This talk will explain what has already been found by the archaeologists, and introduce the Spirit of Wartime Sherwood archaeology project and what it hopes to find.

One ticket per household is needed. Please cancel your ticket if no longer needed as places are limited. All attendees will receive a brief survey after the event, it would be much appreciated if this could be completed to enable us to provide future activities.

The Spirit of Wartime Sherwood project from the Sherwood Forest Trust is kindly funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
