Krampus at Creswell Crags

Saturday 21 December  4pm - 9.30pm

Are you on the naughty list this year?

On December 21, Winter Solstice and the darkest day of the year, Creswell Crags will be visited by the Krampus!

Krampus is a central European figure who usually accompanies St Nicholas - Krampus punishes the bad children, whilst St Nicholas rewards the good. You'll also find a whole gathering of Krampusse and friends at Whitby in early December, for Whitby Krampus Run. After that, he's making his way to the Crags and will be here in the dark hours of 21st Dec to see who's been bad this year. And you can meet him - if you dare!

Folklore and popular tradition are important at the Crags. As part of your ticket we'll also give you a short introductory talk about the Krampus tradition and why we're holding this event here.

And you'll get to go inside our Witch Mark cave and see some of the largest collection of apotropaic (protective) marks in the UK.

If you escape the clutches of Krampus, and weather permitting, we'll also have a solstice gathering by our fire pit - with roast chestnuts, mulled apple juice and marshmallow toasting available, with music to create a festive atmosphere. This will continue until 9.30pm and will include further photo opportunities with the Krampus towards the end of the evening.

Because of the limited access to our cave, entry times will be staggered. You can buy a ticket for 4pm, 5.30pm or 7pm - please take note of, and arrive just before, your alloted time. Your ticket will include the short talk, a visit to the cave, meeting the Krampus and time by the fire pit.

Refreshments will be at a small extra cost.

Please note that access to the cave involves a 10 minute walk on gravel footpaths that can be muddy. The cave entrance is up a wooden staircase and visiting the cave will involve further wooden stairs and a short passageway in which you have to duck, as well as uneven floors. You will be given a hard hat and a torch. Sensible footwear and clothing appropriate to the weather is mandatory.

We don't recommend this event for small children. Parental discretion is recommended. The event will involve being in a dark cave and meeting a horned figure in costume. Please no under-10s.

The exact format of the event will be weather dependant.
