The Bridge at Clumber Park

The Bridge at Clumber Park

I, along with many others, was shocked and appalled earlier this year when the Grade II listed, 250 year old bridge at Clumber Park was very badly damaged by a car.

As I live not too far away and am a frequent visitor to the park near Worksop in north Nottinghamshire, I am often asked how the bridge looks now.

25 Years Young - The Story behind Retford Charter Day

25 Years Young - The Story behind Retford Charter Day

It’s hard to believe it, but Retford Charter Day is 25 years old this year (2018)!

It all started in 1990 with a meeting between 3 far-sighted local gentlemen, Mr. Richard Sutton who was there on behalf of the Scouts and the Retford Lions Club, Mr. Gordon Hamilton-Clark and Mr. Gerry Archer.  The first event they ever organised was the Easter Extravaganza which was held on the Market Square with just 6 stalls and a gentleman pushing a children’s roundabout!

Find out what's happening at Retford Charter Day, Monday 6 May 2019 here!

Kings' Park's 80th Birthday Celebrations

On the 29th June 1938 Retford gained, what we now fondly describe as "the jewel in the heart of the town", the beautiful Kings' Park.

Now, some 8 decades later, there are exciting plans afoot to mark Kings' Park's 80th Birthday.

Bassetlaw District Council, in partnership with EES Showhire and supported by Retford Business Forum, Retford Civic Society and other bodies, are inviting everyone to join them in celebrating the 80th Anniversary of this outstanding, national accredited, Green Flag site.

Don’t knock it until you’ve tried it!

Feet up with a cup of tea and browsing through a copy of 'Made’ magazine just after Christmas, I was contemplating how inactive I had become.  I spotted a small piece on Nordic Walking.  And that was exactly the inspiration I needed!  I dusted off my poles, rang the number provided and before I knew it I had booked onto the first Nordic Walking session of the New Year.

Well I never did!

Have you ever seen that local ‘brown road sign’ and thought ‘the what murals?’  Yes, me too.

Firstly, how is it pronounced?  Well, through sneaky research I have it on good authority that it is pronounced ‘Trakwair’ and secondly what are they?

Here is everything you ever wanted to know about the hidden gem that is the ‘Traquair Murals’.

Another Local Artist makes a welcome return to Retford Arts Festival 2017

Retford Arts Festival is delighted to welcome back local artist Polly Warren, a member of local art-group Artempo and Lincoln & Retford Art Societies, to the second Retford Arts Festival which is being held in venues across the town over the Bank Holiday weekend of 27-29 May 2017.

Last year the first Festival brought together artists of all genres, historians, actors & poets and delivered a memorable 3-day celebration of art, creativity, theatre, music, poetry and more and, once again in 2017 Polly, along with many other artists, will be featuring their work and demonstrating live at venues across the town.

If you're an artist (of any kind) and would like to include your work in Retford's own Arts Festival you've still got time to sign up!

Getting Prepared to Welcome the Tour de Yorkshire to Our Region

Getting Prepared to Welcome the Tour de Yorkshire to Our Region

Despite the rain this afternoon I’ve had a brilliant drive through Bawtry and Austerfield enjoying their ‘yellowness’ in honour of Le Tour de Yorkshire which passes through our region this coming Saturday 30th April.

There’s yellow bunting galore and a wonderful array of yellow bicycles fixed to fences, propped up against walls and even on top of buildings, together with a few blue bicycles, all lining the route that Le Tour will be taking.
