The Clayworth Plough Play

Friday 18th January 2019

The Bluebell Inn, Lound at 7.00pm
The Blue Bell Inn, Gringley at 7.50pm
The Kings Arms, Clarborough at 8.40pm
Retford & Worksop Boat Club, Clayworth at 9.45pm. Non Boat Club members will be welcomed after 9.00pm.

The Clayworth Plough Players keep tradition alive by performing the Plough Play in Clayworth and other local villages every January.

This year they are performing live on Friday 18th January in four local village hostelries - the Bluebell Inn, Lound village at 7.00pm, The Blue Bell Inn, Gringley on the Hill at 7.50pm, The Kings Arms, Clarborough at 8.40pm and finally arriving in Clayworth at the Retford & Worksop Boat Club at 9.45pm.

Centuries ago most villages had a Plough Play all with a similar structure but each would have its own local characteristics and quirks.  They are traditionally performed in early January as it signals the beginning of the farming year.

Our local plough play is a 'mumming' type of play, which is a type of folk play performed by amateur actors, traditionally all male, who were known as 'mummers'.  Mumming plays represent the dying fields of winter followed by the earth's rebirth each spring and the ensuing bounty of harvest providing our food.

The Plough Play is colourful, fun (it can be hilarious!) and is always slightly different each year it's performed!

If you can't catch it on the 18th, you have a second chance to see the Plough Play performed in Town Street, Clayworth on Sunday 20th January at the Blacksmiths at 12 noon and the Brewers Arms at 12.30pm.

WARNING!  The Wiseton Road out of Clayworth towards Drakeholes will be closed for resurfacing from Monday 14th to Friday 25th January, so make sure you travel to Clayworth from the Clarborough/Hayton direction.
